There is a captivating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den betting is not legal. Eight casinos are established in a relatively tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge casino, contains 150 slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga casino is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel building that features numerous luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which provides ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and 88 table games.
